Asmedia USB 3.0 still a problem

Here is what I’ve concluded regarding the Asmedia USB 3.0 problem.

The NEC/Rensas USB 3.0 driver that is included in MultiBeast is causing the “shutdown” problem on the SH67H3/7.

So, we still need an Asmedia USB 3.0 driver for Mac, for all to work perfectly.

Right now, here are your choices:
1) Working USB 3.0 ports, with a shutdown problem
2) Don’t install the NEC/Renasas driver, no USB 3.0 ports working, but hackintosh shuts down properly

As I’ve stated before, I have access to the source code for the Linux Asmedia USB 3.0 driver, but need someone to convert it to Mac. If anyone has the ability to do this, please let us know, so we can all experience some JOY here.

Shuttle XH61 Small Form Factor PC

I am about to embark on building a Hackintosh on the XH61 model. For those that don’t know about this model, here are the specs:

3.5 L Chassis

Shuttle XH61

This model has on-board video only, specs depending on the Clarksdale CPU you chose. Also no built-in WiFi, so an external WiFi adapter will be needed.

I will let you know my progress and how to do it.

Shuttle SH67H3/7 Asmedia USB 3.0 fix

There is a firmware update for the Asmedia USB 3.0 that can be installed on the H3.

The update only works with Mac OS X Lion and must be installed through Windows. I did test it on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and it definitely does not work. So, I’ll be upgrading to Lion very shortly.

You can use the NEC/Renesas USB 3.0 driver in Multibeast.

Shuttle has discontinued the PC55 450W Power Supply

The PC55 450W power supply upgrade or replacement fit the SN27P2, SD37P2, SD39P2, and All P chassis (SB81P, SN25P, SN26P, and SD31P) is no longer available from Shuttle.

Mac OSx on the Shuttle X50V2

Apple quit supporting the Atom processor in version 10.6.2, so you would need version 10.6.1 to install Mac on the X50V2. I couldn’t find that version on Apple’s website to purchase and download, so not sure how to get it. If anyone knows where to get a legal copy, please let me know.

As I stated in an earlier post, you can install Macbuntu on the X50V2 and I’ve posted links to download Macbuntu.

Macbuntu on the SH67H3

I ran the live Macbuntu from the flash drive I created on the SH67H3.

It worked perfectly, all drivers were there, including the Asmedia USB 3.0 and the sound worked perfectly.

This is based off the Natty 11.04 version of Ubuntu.

So, if you want a system with all working components and the Mac UI interface and no kernel panics, this is the one.

Here are the links I used to create a Live Distribution of Macbuntu and install it.

To create a flash drive installation go to the Pendrivelinux website. Just follow all the instructions there, it was very easy.

This gives you the ability to run Macbuntu or what ever distribution you want on your PC to see how you like it before you install it on the hard drive.

I installed this on a Shuttle X50V2 model and amazingly it had all the drivers I needed for that model.
If you decide you want to install on the hard drive, there is an icon on the desktop that you can use to install it. The only thing you do have to do on the Shuttle X50V2 model is go into the BIOS and change the WiFi and Webcam to “always on” to get them to work. The setting for these are under the “Power Management” tab. Then I did have to download and install a Webcam software.

I’m going to try this on the Shuttle SH67H3 model to see how well it works on it. There are linux drivers for the Asmedia USB 3.0 chip and I’m sure the RealTek sound driver is there also.

I’ll post the results when I’m finished.

Alternative to Mac OSX – Macbuntu on Shuttle PCs

I just installed “Macbuntu” on a Shuttle X50V2 for a customer. What a cool OS, looks and works just like Mac OSX, but way more compatible with a PC. The touchscreen worked right after installation along with the WiFi, Video, USB and Sound. I had to install software for the Webcam, but worked perfectly.

You can download and install it on a flash drive, then boot from the flash drive and run a live session for testing on your PC before you install it on the hard drive. It has a “System Test” you can run to make sure all your devices are compatible and drivers loaded. You can add software or drivers if needed and install on the flash drive.
It comes with LibreOffice which is compatible with Microsoft Office. You can install a program called “Wine” to give you compatibility with Microsoft Office and other Windows based programs. There are all kinds of other programs you can install also. You can install Flash, which we know Mac OSX isn’t compatible with. Once Wine is installed and another program, you can even install the Windows based iTunes 10. There are lots of other programs you can install to sync your iPhone, iPod and iPad if you don’t want to use iTunes.

So, if anyone is interested in this OS, which would work very well on the SH67H3 and have working Sound and USB 3.0 and no kernel panics, I highly recommend it and will post all the links and instructions for you.

2.5″ Hard drives in the SH67H3

You can install 2.5″ hard drives in the SH67H3. You need a 3.5″ to 2.5″ bay converter which gives the capability of installing 2 – 2.5″ drives.

I used the SilverStone brand bay converter on the demo unit I built and installed a Crucial M4 SSD drive.
The SSD drives increase the load and application speed considerably, they are well worth the money.

I can recommend the Crucial M4 SSD drives, as I have had no problems with these drives. I have read several poor reviews on the OCZ SSD drives, so do your homework before you buy one.

If you use your Hackintosh for work or business, you can install a FREE Productivity Suite that is compatible with MS Office. Some of you might already know about it, it’s called “OpenOffice Productivity Suite”. There is a version for all platforms including Mac OSx. It includes word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database and a few other useful apps. You can save your files in .doc, .xls, .ppt, etc. formats to make it compatible with MS Office. It will also open files created in MS Office.
