We have a winner!

November 10, 2013

Congratulations Ryan Birk!!

Ryan is the first to submit information successfully installing ESXi 5.5 on the Shuttle SZ87R6.

For all the VMware students and experts, that are thinking of using small form factor whiteboxes for their home labs, the Shuttle SZ87R6 system is the newest technology.  The SZ87R6 supports Intel’s Haswell processors, 32GB Ram, up to 4 x 2.5″ HDD/SSD drives (with adapter) plus an MSATA SSD.  Also, sports Dual Gigabyte Lan and a 80Plus Bronze 500W power supply.

Here is the link to Ryan’s Shuttle SZ87R6 ESXi 5.5 build and instructions to create your own home labs.  He also provides the drivers for the NICs which were removed in the 5.5 version.

Shuttle SZ87R6 ETA – 11/1/13 update

November 1, 2013

I confirmed with Shuttle this week that the SZ87R6 still has an ETA of 11/7/13.

We’re all very excited here, only 6 days left for the big day.  I want to hear from anyone that’s planning on using their SZ87R6 for a white box VMware home lab.  Tell us how the install went and if the SZ87R6 performs well as a VMware box.  I’ll post your write up on the blog, to share your experience with others.

The first person that sends us a write up of their build and install of ESXi 5 that we can post, will receive a gift of a Crucial M4 SATA 6 256GB 2.5″ Solid State Drive.

You can email your write up to info@pcallinone.com.

Update on arrival of Shuttle SZ87R6

October 9, 2013

I just received an update from Shuttle USA, that the ETA for the SZ87R6 was extended to 11/7/13, instead of the original ETA of 10/21/13.

If anyone is interested in the SH87R6, there is still plenty of stock.

Also, wanted to let you know that both of these models are compatible with the newer DDR3L (1.35v) memory that Crucial and some other manufacturers have recently come out with.
